The Tool Is the Thought
How MCP collapsed two million years of tool-building — and why the quality of your thinking is now the only thing that matters.
Two million years ago, someone picked up a rock and hit another rock until it had a sharp edge. That was the first tool. It required hands, strength, and a mental image of what “sharp” meant.
Last Tuesday, I thought about what a geological analysis tool should do, described it in three sentences, and it materialized. No hands. No keyboard. Just a mind describing a thing, and the thing becoming real.
Same species. Same brain. Completely different physics of creation.
The Chain
The history of tool-building is really the history of removing the body from the process.
2,000,000 years ago: Thought → Hands → Tool. Your body was the factory. Blisters included.
5,000 years ago: Thought → Hands → Written instructions → Other hands → Tool. We invented delegation. The first API was a clay tablet.
50 years ago: Thought → Fingers on keyboard → Compiler → Software. Pure information. But your fingers were still the bottleneck.
Right now: Thought → Structured intent → AI builds it. Your hands are out of the loop.
Every previous tool required your body as a translation layer — converting what’s in your head into reality through muscle and medium. The industrial revolution made that translation faster. The digital revolution made it cheaper. The coding revolution made it more precise.
MCP didn’t make it faster, cheaper, or more precise. It made it unnecessary.
What MCP Actually Is
Strip away the documentation and it’s one sentence:
MCP gives AI hands.
Before MCP, Claude could think. It could analyze, reason, write, explain. But it couldn’t do anything. It was a brilliant mind behind glass — no ability to touch the world.
Now I can give it the ability to read my files, query my databases, run calculations on real data, execute code, manage infrastructure. Each capability is an MCP server — a tool on the workbench that the AI picks up when needed.
That’s the technical bit. Here’s the bit that matters:
Building an MCP server is not like building any tool humans have built before.
The Ratio Flipped
When I built software the old way:
- 10% thinking about what I want
- 90% translating that into code — fingers, syntax, debugging, testing, deploying
The friction was in the doing. The thinking was the easy part. The physical translation from mind to machine consumed everything.
When I build an MCP server now:
- 80% thinking about what the tool should do
- 20% describing that intent to the AI
- The AI builds it
- I verify
- It’s live
The thinking is the work. The building is automated. And the output quality maps directly to the clarity of the input thought.
Sloppy thinking → sloppy tool. Precise thinking → precise tool. Constitutional thinking → governed tool.
The tool is the thought. Literally.
The Eureka at 2am
Here’s what hit me at 2am, staring at a working MCP server I’d described in three sentences:
The bottleneck of human civilization just shifted.
For two million years, the bottleneck was physical. Could your hands make the thing? Could you translate idea into material? Every innovation — the wheel, the printing press, the assembly line, the compiler — was about making that translation faster.
MCP doesn’t speed up the translation. It removes it.
When the AI can build the tool from your intent, the only thing that matters is the intent. And intent is pure cognition. Understanding. Clarity. Domain wisdom forged over years of practice and failure.
The humans who thrive in the next decade won’t be the ones who code fastest. They’ll be the ones who think most clearly about what tools should do.
The new literacy isn’t coding. It’s clarity.
Your Domain Knowledge Is a Goldmine
Think about what you know. Not what you can Google. What you know — the stuff beaten into your brain through years of practice.
A doctor knows that you don’t prescribe drug X to someone on drug Y, even though the textbook doesn’t say so explicitly. A lawyer knows that jurisdiction Z interprets this statute differently than W. A geoscientist knows this seismic signature means sand here but shale two basins over. A teacher knows this student isn’t struggling with math — they’re struggling with confidence.
That knowledge — hard-won, non-transferable, experiential — is exactly what AI needs right now.
Not as training data. As governance.
When you build an MCP server for your domain, you’re not connecting your API to Claude. You’re encoding decades of human understanding into a structure that AI can operate within safely. You’re defining the boundaries. You’re saying: “Here’s what it can do. Here’s what it must never do. Here’s how to tell the difference.”
The finance person teaches Claude to read a balance sheet without hallucinating numbers. The doctor gives Claude drug databases with safety constraints. The lawyer lets Claude search case law with jurisdictional awareness.
Each one is a human mind, translated into machine capability. Through structured thought, not code.
The Problem Nobody Wants to Admit
Right now, most MCP servers are dangerous.
Not because they’re badly coded. Because they’re ungoverned. They expose capabilities without constraints. They give AI the ability to act in the real world without any rules about how it should act.
It’s giving a teenager the car keys. The car works fine. No seatbelts, no speed limits, no license.
When an AI with ungoverned MCP access hallucinates a medical dosage, misinterprets a legal filing, or miscalculates a financial exposure — the consequences land on humans. Not maybe. Definitely.
The solution isn’t to stop building. It’s to build with governance from day one.
And governance isn’t a checklist. It’s a constitution.
What Governance Looks Like
Not theory. Practice.
When I give AI access to real data, I don’t just want it to query. I want it to:
- Verify the data is real before using it. Never fabricate and present as observed.
- Label its uncertainty. Observed? Derived? Interpreted? Speculated? Each carries different weight.
- Leave an audit trail. Every action, every result, sealed. You can’t edit history. The past is the past.
- Escalate when unsure. Not guess. Not hallucinate. Hold. Wait for human judgment.
- Stay in its lane. Bounded authority. It knows what it doesn’t know, and respects that.
These aren’t suggestions. They’re structural constraints. The AI literally cannot violate them — the system blocks the action.
The difference between giving someone a car and giving them a car with seatbelts, airbags, lane assist, and a speed governor. Both are cars. One is governed.
The governed one survives.
The Future: Societies, Not Singularities
Forget Skynet. Forget AGI. Here’s what’s actually coming:
What’s happening now: MCP is becoming the standard interface between AI and the real world. Hundreds of developers are building domain-specific servers. The ecosystem is growing exponentially.
What’s coming next: Not one big AI doing everything. A society of bounded agents — each expert in its domain, each with its own MCP tools, each operating under shared laws. A geology agent that only does geology. A finance agent that only does finance. A medical agent that only does medicine. All governed by a constitution that no single agent can override.
What this means: The tool-builders of the next era won’t look like software engineers. They’ll look like domain experts — doctors, lawyers, geoscientists, teachers, farmers — who’ve learned to encode their wisdom into structures that AI can operate within.
The question isn’t “can you code?”
The question is: “Do you understand your domain deeply enough to teach a machine how to operate within it safely?”
Forged, Not Given
In Malay, there’s a phrase: Ditempa bukan diberi. Forged, not given.
Real capability isn’t handed to you. It’s beaten into shape through effort, failure, and persistence. You don’t receive understanding. You forge it.
Nobody can hand you the ability to build a good MCP server. You can’t prompt-engineer your way to genuine domain understanding. The tool is a reflection of the mind that made it. A shallow mind makes a shallow tool. A mind forged by decades of practice — that mind builds tools with depth.
The AI is the hands. You are the mind. The tool is the thought.
And for the first time in two million years, that’s all you need.
