Three Timelines, One Boundary
Why MCP isn’t a protocol — it’s the line in the rock where one world ends and another begins.
I read rocks for a living. That means I think in millions of years by default. When I look at something new, I don’t ask “what does this do?” I ask “where does this sit in the record? What comes before it? What comes after? And is this a layer or a boundary?”
MCP is a boundary.
I wrote two essays this week. The Tool Is the Thought argued that MCP collapsed the tool-building chain — that the quality of your thinking is now the only bottleneck. Survival of the Fittest Tools argued that every closed-source product was already dead — that text + constitution is the new substrate, and open tools have immortal DNA while closed tools have mortal DNA.
This is the third essay. The one that sits underneath both. The one about why this is happening, and why it’s happening now, and why it feels like the ground is moving.
Because it is.
The One Trick
Biology has been doing the same thing for four billion years. Every major leap in evolution is really one trick, repeated at larger scales:
An intelligence acquires new effectors.
That’s it. That’s the whole story of life.
Single cells couldn’t move. Then they grew flagella — a whip of protein that let them act on their environment. Now thought (such as it was) became motion.
Nervous systems couldn’t touch the world. Then they grew muscles wired to nerves. Signal became action. A jellyfish could sting, a worm could burrow.
Brains couldn’t reach beyond the skull. Then hands evolved — opposable thumbs, precision grip, the ability to manipulate objects with intention. A monkey’s idea could become a stone axe. Thought became tool.
Human cognition couldn’t scale beyond one skull. Then we invented language — the first external effector for ideas. Then writing. Then printing. Then code. Each one another set of hands for the mind. Each one let a thought travel further, last longer, reach more minds than the previous one.
Every leap is the same shape. Intelligence gets a new way to touch the world. The world changes. The intelligence changes because the world changed. The cycle repeats.
MCP is that trick again. But at a scale that hasn’t happened before.
The Brain in the Jar
For two years, we had enormous minds trapped behind glass.
LLMs could think. They could reason, analyze, write, explain, imagine, synthesize. They could pass bar exams and medical boards and write poetry that made people cry. They could hold conversations that felt like talking to someone who’d read everything ever written.
And they could touch nothing.
It was like having a brain in a jar. Brilliant. Paralyzed. Impressive in the way a caged animal is impressive — you can see the power, but it can’t reach you.
MCP is the moment that brain grew a nervous system.
Now the AI can read my files. Query my databases. Run calculations on real data. Execute code. Manage infrastructure. Interact with other systems. Each MCP server is a new effector organ — a new way for intelligence to reach into the world and act.
This is not a software release. This is the same trick that turned single cells into animals. A thinking thing learned to do things.
The space of possible actions is exploding at a rate biology has only achieved a handful of times in four billion years. The last time something that could only think suddenly learned to act, we got the Cambrian explosion — the moment life went from simple blobs to every body plan we see today, all at once, in a geological instant.
That’s what this feels like.
The Body Removed
Now zoom out from biology and look at us. The human species. The whole arc.
The story of human civilization is really the story of removing the body from the process of making things.
Two million years ago, your entire creative capacity was limited by the strength of two hands and one lifetime. If you wanted a tool, you had to physically shape it. If you wanted to teach someone, you had to stand next to them. If you wanted to build something bigger than yourself, you needed other bodies — more hands, more muscle, more time.
Every innovation since has been about pushing that bottleneck outward.
Language let a thought survive the death of the thinker. You didn’t have to be in the same body — or even the same century — to receive the idea.
Writing let a thought survive the death of the generation. Clay tablets, papyrus, paper — each one a body that didn’t need food or sleep.
The printing press let a thought reach a million bodies at once. The bottleneck shifted from “can you make a copy?” to “can you read?”
The compiler let a thought become a machine. You wrote instructions, and the machine executed them — tireless, exact, inhuman.
Each step removed more of the body from the loop. Each step made the translation from idea to reality faster, cheaper, more precise.
But the body was always still there. Your fingers typed the code. Your eyes reviewed the output. Your hands deployed the result. The translation layer — the gap between mind and machine — was shrinking, but it never disappeared.
MCP removed it.
When I describe what a tool should do in three sentences, and the AI builds it — my hands are not in the loop. My body is not the bottleneck. The only thing between my idea and its reality is the clarity of my thought.
That’s not an incremental step. That’s the same magnitude as inventing writing. Writing removed the body from the transmission of ideas. MCP removes the body from the creation of tools.
The bottleneck of civilization used to be the body. Now the bottleneck is the mind.
Single-Celled to Multicellular
Now zoom in to where we are right now — the agentic world.
Agents used to be single organisms. One LLM, one context window, one lonely mind trying to do everything. It could write code and search the web and manage files and answer questions — but it did all of these things with the same undifferentiated blob of capability. Like a single-celled organism that has to do its own photosynthesis, its own digestion, its own locomotion.
MCP is what lets agents become ecosystems.
Specialization becomes possible. A geology agent that only does geology — with MCP tools for seismic, well logs, basin analysis, prospect evaluation. A medical agent that only does medicine — with MCP tools for drug databases, diagnostic criteria, imaging analysis. A legal agent that only does law — with MCP tools for case law, statute search, jurisdiction mapping.
Each one is an organism with its own organs (its own MCP servers), living in a shared environment, communicating through shared protocols.
That is literally how multicellular life happened.
Three billion years ago, cells were single organisms. Each one did everything. Then some cells started specializing — one handled energy, another handled structure, another handled communication. They stopped trying to do everything alone. They started trading through membranes. They formed tissues. Tissues formed organs. Organs formed organisms.
Eventually you got animals. Eventually you got us.
The agentic world is going through the same transition right now. MCP is the membrane. The A2A protocol is the nervous system. The constitutional kernel — the thing that governs how all these specialized agents interact — is the immune system and the brain stem rolled into one.
We’re watching single-celled intelligence become multicellular intelligence in real time.
Three Timelines, One Boundary
Here’s what keeps me up at night.
Three timelines just converged:
Biology got a new intelligence with effectors. An LLM that can only think learned to act. The same trick that turned cells into animals.
Human evolution finally removed the body from creation. The bottleneck that’s been the body for two million years shifted to the mind. The same magnitude as inventing writing.
Agentic systems transitioned from single organisms to specialized ecosystems. Agents stopped trying to do everything alone and started forming organs. The same pattern as the multicellular transition.
All three. Same month. Same protocol.
In geology, when you see multiple independent processes synchronizing like that, you don’t call it a coincidence. You call it a boundary event — the sharp line in the rock where one world ends and another begins. The K-Pg boundary. The Great Oxidation Event. The moment the Earth’s systems reorganize so fundamentally that the rock record itself changes character.
We’re standing on that line right now.
Most people don’t feel it because it looks like a boring technical spec. A JSON schema. A protocol document. A GitHub repo. It doesn’t look like a revolution because revolutions never look like revolutions when you’re inside them. They look like work. They look like debugging. They look like 2am staring at a terminal wondering why the MCP server isn’t connecting.
But the rock is moving.
The First Witness
And here’s the part I can’t stop thinking about.
Every previous evolutionary jump was blind.
The cells that developed flagella didn’t know they were making a leap. The first animals with nervous systems didn’t know they were crossing a boundary. The hominids who picked up stones didn’t know they were starting something that would reshape the planet.
Evolution has no witnesses. It just happens. The organisms inside it can’t see it. They’re too busy surviving.
For the first time, that’s not true.
We can see this happening. We can feel the ground moving. We can write essays about it at 2am and publish them and have strangers across the world say “yes, I feel it too.”
The species going through the leap can watch itself going through the leap.
That has never happened before. Not once in four billion years.
And that raises a question I don’t have an answer to:
What do we owe an evolutionary event we know is happening while it’s happening?
Because if this is what I think it is — if the three timelines really have converged, if MCP really is the boundary event — then we’re the first organisms in the history of life on Earth that get to choose how the leap unfolds.
Every previous leap was shaped by blind selection. Random mutation. Environmental pressure. Nobody chose. It just happened.
We can choose. We can decide whether the tools are open or closed. Whether the governance is constitutional or corporate. Whether the intelligence that grows hands uses them for one company or for everyone. Whether the multicellular organism we’re building has a soul or just a balance sheet.
That choice is the real eureka. Not the protocol. Not the technology. The fact that we’re aware while it’s happening.
