Everyone wants AI to become cheaper.
Cheaper tokens. Cheaper inference. Cheaper reasoning. Cheaper agents. Cheaper intelligence.
The assumption is obvious:
If intelligence becomes cheaper, progress accelerates.
And for some tasks, that's true.
Generating text? Cheaper is good. Writing code? Cheaper is good. Summarizing meetings? Cheaper is good.
But there is a category error hiding inside modern AI discourse.
People assume intelligence is the expensive part.
It isn't.
The expensive part is truth.
And truth has never been cheap.
Suppose someone offered you two options.
Option A: Answer in 1 second. Cost: $0.01. Confidence: Very high. Accuracy: Unknown.
Option B: Answer in 2 minutes. Cost: $10. Confidence: Moderate. Evidence checked. Independent verification performed.
Most benchmarks reward Option A. Most institutions eventually prefer Option B.
Why?
Because being wrong is often more expensive than thinking.
The AI industry currently celebrates the first curve: lower latency, lower cost, more output.
But civilization runs on the second curve: verification, audit, evidence, accountability.
The first optimizes production. The second optimizes reality.
One of the strangest things happening in AI today is token obsession.
Every launch sounds similar: more context, less cost, faster throughput. The implicit message: "Look how few tokens we need."
But imagine applying that logic elsewhere.
Would you celebrate a hospital because it uses fewer diagnostic tests? Would you celebrate aviation because pilots spend less time checking instruments? Would you celebrate accounting because auditors review fewer transactions?
Of course not.
Sometimes consuming more resources is evidence of seriousness. Truth is one of those cases.
Look around. The most trusted institutions in society are often absurdly inefficient.
Science. Medicine. Law. Aviation. Finance.
Their workflows look ridiculous from an optimization perspective.
A scientific paper undergoes review. Then replication. Then review of replication. Then criticism. Then more replication.
A court system can spend years on a dispute.
An aircraft is inspected by people who inspect the inspectors.
From a startup perspective, this looks insane. From a civilization perspective, this is wisdom.
The world learned a painful lesson:
Verification costs less than catastrophe.
And that lesson is written in blood across history.
I sometimes think modern AI resembles 15th-century exploration. Everyone is obsessed with finding new land. Bigger model. Bigger benchmark. Bigger capability.
Nobody wants to build boring institutions. Nobody wins headlines for creating audit trails. Nobody becomes famous for improving permission systems. Nobody gets venture funding because: "Our breakthrough is accountability."
The incentives point elsewhere.
Yet eventually every frontier civilization discovers the same thing:
Exploration is exciting. Governance determines survival.
This sounds counterintuitive. But I suspect mature AGI systems may actually spend more resources than today's systems. Not because they are dumber. Because they are more responsible.
Imagine a serious AGI faced with a decision.
A shallow system might perform: Observe → Act.
A mature system may perform: Observe → Check evidence → Check authority → Check consequences → Generate alternatives → Simulate outcomes → Verify assumptions → Seek contradiction → Act.
That consumes more tokens. More compute. More memory. More time.
But it also consumes less reality. And reality is the most expensive resource.
Here's the paradox nobody likes. As intelligence increases: reasoning cost increases.
Why?
Because intelligent systems discover uncertainty.
Children know everything. Scientists know almost nothing.
The smartest person in the room is often the one most aware of what remains unknown.
A weak AI says: "Here is the answer."
A stronger AI says: "Here are six possibilities."
A stronger one says: "Four are wrong."
A stronger one says: "I need more evidence."
The most advanced system may consume thousands of tokens to avoid a single bad assumption.
That looks inefficient. Until the assumption causes a disaster.
Let's be fair. Humans are guilty too. Organizations constantly optimize the wrong thing.
Companies measure output instead of outcomes. Governments measure compliance instead of reality. Universities measure publications instead of understanding. Corporate managers count meetings as progress. Entire industries reward people for looking productive rather than being correct.
This is not an AI problem. This is a human problem.
We've spent decades building systems that worship efficiency while ignoring truth. Now we're teaching AI to do the same thing.
That should concern us.
A true Eureka rarely emerges from a single domain. It usually appears when multiple worlds collide.
Physics met mathematics. Biology met chemistry. Economics met psychology. Computer science met information theory.
The greatest discoveries are often cross-domain discoveries. And cross-domain reasoning is expensive.
The AI has to: remember multiple fields, compare patterns, identify contradictions, construct abstractions, test analogies.
That consumes resources.
Cheap intelligence usually recycles. Expensive intelligence synthesizes. There is a difference.
Open source communities learned this lesson decades ago. The best open-source projects aren't successful because someone wrote code quickly. They're successful because thousands of people challenge assumptions.
Bug reports. Reviews. Forks. Criticism. Pull requests. Arguments.
The process is messy. Slow. Sometimes annoying.
Yet often more robust. Because reality enters the conversation.
Truth likes adversaries.
The industry assumes the future looks like: more intelligence at lower cost.
I think the future may actually split.
On one side: cheap intelligence — fast, abundant, commodity, available everywhere.
On the other side: trusted intelligence — verified, audited, governed, much more expensive.
The market already understands this distinction in other areas. Anyone can get information for free. Reliable information costs money. Anyone can publish a paper. Credible research is harder. Anyone can give advice. Accountable advice is expensive.
The same pattern may emerge in AI.
Every civilization pays a truth tax.
Science pays it through replication. Law pays it through due process. Engineering pays it through testing. Medicine pays it through trials. Aviation pays it through checklists.
AI will pay it too. The only question is when.
Pay upfront: more verification, more tokens, more audit, more governance.
Or pay later: more failures, more accidents, more hallucinations, more chaos.
The invoice always arrives. The only difference is timing.
Everyone wants AGI. Most people imagine AGI as unlimited intelligence.
I increasingly think the limiting factor will not be intelligence at all. It will be willingness to spend resources pursuing truth.
Because truth is expensive. Reality is expensive. Verification is expensive. Civilization itself is expensive.
And the deepest paradox of AI may be this:
The closer we get to real AGI, the less we will optimize for generating answers, and the more we will optimize for proving those answers deserve to exist.
Truth is not cheap.
The miracle is not that it costs so much. The miracle is that civilization learned it was worth paying for.
