Every color on that globe is a mapped rock unit, not a texture. The tiles come from Macrostrat — a living, open geoinformatics system that harmonizes hundreds of published geologic maps into one queryable model of Earth's upper crust. When you click the globe, the answer comes back from the same API the research community uses, with the map source cited. The counters below are read from the pipes when this page loads — if a pipe dies, the number is withheld, not invented.
Dynamic Earth — three readings of the same globe
A geologic map looks still. It is not. It is a slow-motion photograph of a running engine — every unit on it is mid-journey between being made, being buried, and being destroyed.
The ground moves
The cyan lines on the globe are plate boundaries. The plates they bound slide past, under, and away from each other at 1–10 cm per year — fingernail speed, continental consequence. The gold points are today's earthquakes: the machine's exhaust, reported by the USGS within minutes. Load this page tomorrow and the planet will have moved again.
The map is deep time
Click the globe and the answer carries an age — millions to billions of years. The oldest Macrostrat units approach 4,000 Ma; the youngest are younger than our species. One pixel on this globe can hold a Triassic granite intruded while the first dinosaurs walked, wearing a skin of Quaternary soil laid down last ice age. The map is not what the Earth is. It is what the Earth has survived.
Basins are the memory
Where the crust stretches, it sags, and the sag fills with sediment — layer on layer, a tape recorder of climate, sea level, and life. Buried deep enough, dead plankton becomes oil and gas. Every basin on this globe is a chapter; the Malay Basin, where this federation's founder spent 13+ years reading rocks offshore Malaysia, is one of them.

For the extra curious · how we know these ages
The Hadean–Archean boundary (~4,000 Ma) is marked by the oldest known rocks on Earth: the Acasta Gneiss in Canada's Slave Craton (4.03 Ga). The Archean–Proterozoic boundary (~2,500 Ma) coincides with the Great Oxidation Event — free oxygen first appearing in the atmosphere, a signature of cyanobacterial photosynthesis. The Proterozoic–Phanerozoic boundary (539 Ma) is the Cambrian Explosion: within ~20 million years, almost every animal body plan we know appears in the fossil record. We are 539 million years into the Phanerozoic and about 300,000 years into Homo sapiens. The bar is not fair — and that is the lesson.

The globe opens looking at the Malay Basin for a reason. This is where the founder spent 13+ years reading rocks offshore Peninsular Malaysia. What follows is the basin's story — from tectonic birth to petroleum system to the wells that proved it.
How a sag becomes a province
In the Oligo–Miocene, the Sundaland crust stretched in a back-arc setting, faults dropped the basement into half-grabens, and ~30 million years of sediment poured in — lacustrine source rocks at the base, fluvio-deltaic reservoirs above, all sealed by marine mudstones as the sea returned.
Heat did the rest. The tape-recorder became a petroleum system: one of Southeast Asia's great gas provinces. Reading that record — seismic, well logs, geochemistry — is what an exploration geoscientist does, and it is the human craft the GEOX agentic engine: evidence-gated, human-decided.
In 2025, the LEBAH EMAS-1 wildcat opened a new play fairway along the Western Hinge Fault — proof that even a mature basin can surprise you. The four founder wells below are the ones the sovereign actually signed off on. Their coordinates are withheld; their existence is witness enough.
